Shoulder Arthroscopy
The shoulder is a very complex joint, equally vulnerable to acute and overuse injuries. Thorough knowledge is required to accurately assess these injuries and offer useful treatment recommendations. In sports the shoulder is often pushed to physiologic limits where breakdown can occur. This presents unique challenges to the sports medicine physician and thoroughly prepares the physician for handling problems resulting from trauma or overuse, including those from recreational sports and the work place.
Arthroscopy has helped to provide a better understanding of many shoulder disorders. As a result these can often be managed with conservative treatment.
When surgery is necessary, arthroscopic techniques have helped to make traditionally extensive shoulder procedures, such as ligament reconstruction and repair of damage to the rotator cuff tendon, less invasive. Dr. Byrd has performed thousands of arthroscopic shoulder procedures. In addition to lectures and publications on these topics, Dr. Byrd has produced highly popular educational programs distributed by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. |
